“TRACE” is a mirror based on the traditional, basic Japanese tray. By setting the mirror surface slightly inward from the rim, the connection from the rim to the bottom plate is visible, evoking the original form of a tray. We have transformed elements of lacquerware into a shape that can be easily incorporated into modern life.
This is a lacquered version with traditional Tame-nuri finish. Tame-nuri involves applying vermilion lacquer as a base, then coating it with clear lacquer to finish. This results in a deep, translucent color where the underlying vermilion (Aka-tame) or green (Midori-tame) subtly shows through. Furthermore, as the transparency of lacquer increases over time, the translucency of the underlying vermilion will also increase, causing the color to change with the passage of time.

Formed in 2008 by Kenji Ito and Takahiro Umino. Both graduated from Kuwasawa Design School. They create objects that blend into everyday life by grasping the ambiguous atmosphere behind things that cannot be clearly understood, while keeping that ambiguity intact.
