LP Record: Ryuichi Sakamoto "Tony Takitani" 2LP
It creates a serene and beautiful world with only piano performances, including "Solitude," which is frequently played at concerts. When the film was released, it was not available physically on CD or vinyl, and was only sold as a download on the iTunes Store, which generated buzz. The CD was subsequently released in 2007, and this marks the first time it has been released on LP.
Of course, the music by Ryuichi Sakamoto, which has been released on vinyl for the first time, is wonderful, but I strongly recommend watching the film "Tony Takitani" before listening to this record. The music gently accompanies the beautiful cinematography by director Jun Ichikawa, and after watching the film and then listening to the soundtrack, the scenes that resonate with the songs vividly come back to life. At the time, director Jun Ichikawa reportedly requested Ryuichi Sakamoto to create "music that feels as if it doesn't exist." To fulfill this request, Sakamoto watched the film before recording, prepared fragments of melodies, brought a large screen into the studio, and improvised on the piano while watching the projected images. The album features only piano performances and has a very simple structure, but Sakamoto's unique and memorable phrases and precise sounds beautifully express the color, image, and atmosphere of the film "Tony Takitani" through music.
It can be said to be a rare work in which the experimentally produced visuals and music are perfectly synchronized, successfully visualizing Haruki Murakami's world, which is often considered difficult to translate into film.
The film, produced on a low budget, was shot on sets that cleverly utilized this limitation. After watching the main feature, I also highly recommend checking out the making-of footage.
