An ambient work that interweaves a variety of instruments, from clarinets and modular synths to steel guitars and flugelhorns.
"The Tinnitus Chorus" is the second tinnitus-themed album of the year, following Lola de la Mata's "Oceans on Azimuth." In Michael Scott Dawson's case, "tinnitus and clicks and hisses drowned out the studio sound." While de la Mata plunges into the audacious sonic center, Dawson calls on friends for help. Ten guests appear on "The Tinnitus Chorus," one twice. Just as white noise can cancel out tinnitus, a wide variety of influences coalesce into a seamless set. On the cover art, a serene pink house sets the tone, with two chimneys towering in the background.
The little pops, tape hisses, and whirs that have always characterized Dawson's work now feel less like nostalgia and more like oral echoes. The affliction hasn’t disappeared, but for stretches, it recedes. Michael Grigoni, who lends a hand on the opening and closing, invites the listener — and perhaps Dawson as well — to wake and lie in peace. It’s never been more apparent that ambient artists make this kind of music often because they need it themselves. The birdsong, too, is shrill, but welcoming. The ocean is low and universal, a panacea.
