John Davis is a sound artist and filmmaker based in the Bay Area of California. He has released works on labels such as Root Strata and Digitalis, as well as on his own Bimodal Press. "Landlines" marks Davis's return to the Students of Decay catalog following his full-length album released in 2013, and could be considered a spiritual successor to that album. All of Davis's work possesses an idyllic sensibility, firmly rooted in the forests and coastlines of Northern California, moving with a delicate and irregular rhythm, like dust motes made visible in bright sunlight. The opening track, "Verichrome," masterfully captures a soundscape by interweaving music-moussy formant synthesis and meditative vocal sampling with an exquisitely minimal suite for prepared piano. In a general sense, the concept here is nostalgia, a desire to ponder the importance of connection with oneself and the world around us. The title is, of course, a euphemism for the telephone, but I am also thinking about landscapes, horizons, infrastructure, and the invisible lines that connect us, the threads that bind us, and the communities that shape us.
