LP Record: Hiroshi Ebina "Into the Darkness of the Night" (Blue Vinyl)
A lullaby for insomniacs, guiding them from the silence and solitude of night to healing.
A new album by Tokyo-based sound artist Hiroshi Ebina has been released by KITCHEN. LABEL in Singapore. A lullaby for insomniacs, guiding the silence and solitude of the urban night towards healing.
Following his 2022 KITCHEN. LABEL debut, "In Science and the Human Heart," this album delves deeper into Hiroshi Ebina's characteristic serene and ethereal analog soundscapes, specially created for the quiet hours of the night. Ebina embarked on this project initially intending to create sonic healing for his partner's insomnia, but as recording progressed, it evolved into a complex work exploring the mysterious and sacred nature of the night.
The album's narrative unfolds through nine carefully constructed tracks, each drawing listeners deeper into the night. Using a maximum of two or three instruments per track, ranging from the simple tones of a music box or water-filled wine glasses to cutting-edge technology like Eurorack synthesizers and algorithmic sequencers, Ebina creates a delicate, transparent, and hypnotic soundscape. It begins with bright, high-pitched synthesizers reminiscent of twilight with flickering city lights, gradually shifting to mid-range tones that gently guide the listener into a dream world. This sonic descent mirrors how we surrender to sleep each night—a commonplace yet extraordinary experience akin to temporary death, where consciousness fades and dreams emerge from the depths of the subconscious.
This work gently envelops the listener, providing solace and calm to those awake in the darkness, guiding the silence and solitude of the urban night towards healing.
Artwork is by Tokyo-based photographer Yoichi Onoda, and mastering is by Joseph Branciforte (Greyfade Studio) in New York.

Hiroshi Ebina
A Tokyo-based sound artist whose activities span a wide range, including composing and performing ambient music, performing as a gagaku musician, and creating photographic works using film cameras. After working in New York, he resumed his activities in Japan in 2018. For composition, he primarily uses modular synthesizers, tape machines, and various acoustic instruments. In recent years, he has released works through KITCHEN. LABEL, Mystery Circles, and Seil Records.
"Serendipity" is an indispensable element when discussing Hiroshi Ebina's music. He takes a process of arranging sounds like spreading dots and lines on a blank sheet of paper and then shaping the music by applying rules. When composing, he emphasizes not only aspects like rhythm and pitch but also the tactile sensation of sounds and the silent spaces between them.
