Book: MORANDE'S OBJECTS. THE COMPLETE ARCHIVE OF CASA MORANDI by Joel Meyerowitz
This book is an expanded and revised edition of the identically titled book published by the same publisher in 2016. It records the entirety of the objects for still life painting left in the studio of Italian painter Giorgio Morandi, photographed by the artist.
In the spring of 2015, the artist stayed at Morandi's studio at 36 Via Fondazza in Bologna. The simple rooms where the paintings were created are filled with items such as vases, cans, shells, bottles, and jars, quietly placed on shelves, sideboards, chests of drawers, and even on the floor. Morandi selected and arranged these items on makeshift tables and, with the light that fell upon them, painted them in oil, watercolor, and pencil, creating an elusive body of work that continues to attract many artists to this day.
In the same space, approximately 50 years after Morandi's death, the artist faced the surfaces and light that Morandi had observed, accepting the same shadows as he photographed. He carefully picked up each object, re-placing them on the marked tabletop, and recorded every object left in the studio. While giving each item its own unique presence, the artist's own gaze formed new images.
This book is the first to present a complete archive of the objects left in Morandi's studio, as a whole. This expanded and revised edition includes over 130 new illustrations, a new essay by Amanda Renshaw, and updated bibliography information.
In the spring of 2015, world-renowned photographer Joel Meyerowitz spent time in Giorgio Morandi’s studio at 36 Via Fondazza in Bologna. The simple rooms where Morandi painted are filled with objects — vases, tins, shells, bottles, and jugs — arranged on shelves, sideboards, chests of drawers, and spilling onto the floor. Morandi selected and arranged these items on makeshift tables to capture them, and the light that fell upon them, in oil, watercolor, and pencil, creating an elusive body of work that continues to inspire artists.
Some fifty years after Morandi’s death, in the very same space, Meyerowitz engaged with Morandi’s surfaces and light, allowing the same shadows to fall. He handled each object with care, placing them one by one on Morandi’s marked tabletop. Meyerowitz photographed every object in the studio, bestowing upon each a sense of individuality while making them his own.
'Morandi’s Objects' presents, for the first time, the complete archive of Giorgio Morandi’s objects, photographed in their entirety in the artist’s studio.
Originally published in 2016, this expanded and revised edition includes more than 130 new photographs, a new essay by Amanda Renshaw and an updated bibliography.
