Book: TORRINGTON PROJECT by Tom Burr
This is a collection of works by American conceptual artist Tom Burr. In Torrington, a city in northwestern Connecticut, 19th-century factories stand repurposed for new uses today. This book documents the three years the artist, who has studied the interrelationship of architecture, identity, and public space, spent occupying and working in one of these factories. In a move that pushes back against the catalog raisonné, a comprehensive catalog of an artist's complete body of work, this project blurs the boundaries between studio and gallery, art and architecture, and artist and community. Through extensive photographic documentation, critically written essays, and deeply personal reflections, it maps the physical transformation of space and the network born from social interactions. This book functions not as a static record, but as an active expansion of the project itself. It becomes a place where past works, new interventions, and evolving ideas circulate and unravel beyond their original context.
From 2021 to 2024, the artist undertook a residency program in this vast former factory. The project, which was neither a conventional exhibition nor a typical studio, transformed the building into what the artist calls a "living archive" – a space for revisiting, recontextualizing, and at times restoring past works. More than just a place for pure creation, the artist gathered over 90 works from his entire career, breaking down the divide between past and present. He also opened the space to fellow artists, inviting sculptor and performance artist Gordon Hall, artist and dancer Maria Hassabi, and artist Nick Mauss to perform. By developing the project in this way, the network of viewers also expanded, which was, of course, gladly welcomed. This initiative explores the fluid interplay and interaction as works are conceived, received, and considered from a historical perspective, and the artist reflects on how his own works have changed over time. Ultimately, this research is now unfolding in the form of this book.
It includes texts by art critic and art historian George Baker, Jordan Carter, who has served as a curator at institutions such as the Dia Art Foundation, artist, curator, and critic Aria Dean, curator and writer Jody Graf, artist, filmmaker, and writer Renée Green, art critic, art historian, and curator David Joselit, Christine Messineo, who has experience as a director at galleries and art fairs, Humberto Moro, who has experience as Associate Director of Programs at the Dia Art Foundation and is involved in curating, publishing, and education, and art researcher and writer Blake Oetting. In addition, it features the artist's reflections on the project, as well as ephemera excerpted from extensive documentation and archives.
This project visually summarizes the social and spatial dimensions that define the project's title, "TORRINGTON PROJECT," emphasizing the artist's ongoing engagement with architecture, institutional critique, personal history, and the transformation of public space.
