Carpets, reliefs, sculptures, installations – this book presents two exhibitions that offer an overview of the works created by an artist who can justifiably be called one of the most influential contemporary textile artists in the world, from 1955 to 2024.
Her unique works are exhibited where materials, colors, and space interact with each other. Wall works, tapestries, reliefs, sculptures, and installations showcase an endless range of possibilities for three-dimensional expression. The question, "What can be done with thread?" is something the artist has tirelessly explored since the 1950s when she studied under the artist Josef Albers. Throughout her career, she has continuously challenged our perceptions and concepts of art and textiles, color and structure, and works and space, exploring a wide range of techniques that bring surprise.
The Josef Albers Museum Quadrat Bottrop, located in Josef Albers' hometown of Bottrop, is an architecturally acclaimed facility. The exhibition unfolds in eight open rooms in the Gigon / Guyer extension, arranged in dialogue with the works of her mentor, Josef Albers. The exhibition covers all periods of the artist's work, including previously unexhibited paintings created during her formative years in the 1950s, when she was taught by Josef Albers at Yale University, and previously unseen archival materials from this period, all capturing the essence of the artist. Early textile works, works created during her stays in Mexico, Chile, and Morocco, designs created for large-scale architectural commissions, and recent wall objects, sculptures, and installations using abundant color were also exhibited.
The other venue, Kunsthalle Düsseldorf, provides a comprehensive overview of her recent creative activities, following the exhibition at the Josef Albers Museum. It showcases large-scale and some site-specific installations and sculptures. Contrasting with the brutalist architecture of the exhibition space, these works exude intense power, revealing her latest experimental characteristics that emphasize material and form.
This book is bilingual in Japanese and German, and is the artist's first publication in German. In addition to illustrations and exhibition views, it includes contributions from internationally acclaimed figures who have followed the artist for many years, including gallerist Suzanne Demisch, curator and art historian Julia Garimorth, artist Michel Gauthier, friend and textile historian Monique Lévi-Strauss, curator Cara McCarty, and curator and critic Mouna Mekouar.
