A collection of works by French photographer Stéphane Couturier. Published in conjunction with an exhibition held at the Abbaye de Montmajour during Les Rencontres d'Arles from July to October 2025. The artist is known for his representative series "MELTING POINT," which combines images by capturing Toyota's Valenciennes factory (Nord, northern France) and the architecture of Brasília from various perspectives, as well as series that capture the architecture designed by Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret in the North Indian city of Chandigarh and the iconic buildings of Algiers head-on, horizontally and vertically. In the "MELTING POINT" series, he re-examines the relationship between photography as a medium and the inherently objective nature of photographs, creating painterly depictions composed of highly diverse forms and colors that fuse abstraction and documentation by superimposing multiple images. In this work, the artist explores the concept of "artistic integration" by connecting two architects, Eileen Gray and Le Corbusier, who left their mark on the masterpiece of modern housing, Villa E-1027. It was in 1926 that Eileen Gray, an Irish product designer and architect, conceived of the E-1027 project as an architectural manifesto for her lover, Jean Badovici, an architect and architectural critic. This villa, located in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, France, was named with an alphanumeric code combining their names. "E" stands for Eileen, "10" for Jean (the 10th letter of the alphabet), "2" for Badovici's B, and "7" for Gray's G. Ten years after its completion, an astonishing event unfolded that would later make history. In 1938 and 1939, Le Corbusier boldly intervened on the walls of the villa, painting frescoes. Eileen Gray, who had not authorized these murals, repudiated them and never returned to the villa. In this work, the artist uses photography as an expression in the contemporary era to fuse periods by superimposing the architectural style, the painted frescoes, the furniture, and the exterior space, reconstructing the space, and sketching the history of this iconic location. The freedom of transparency, the telescopic depiction provided by nature and architecture, and the capturing of details of Le Corbusier's frescoes and Eileen Gray's designed furniture bring pride to this place. The resulting dual images can complicate the layers of reality to express movement, instability, transience, the things between document and fiction, and a new perception of the world. This book comprises all the works in the series, approximately 30 large-format photographs, bringing us rich details and showing the "synthesis of art" unfolded by this architectural ensemble. The "+123" added to the title represents Le Corbusier, with "12" referring to L and "3" referring to C. By merging Eileen Gray's architecture and Le Corbusier's murals, the artist invites the viewer to a kind of "reconciliation of art." Includes an essay by Nathalie Herschdorfer, art historian and director of Photo Elysée in Lausanne, Switzerland, placing this work in its appropriate context.
