    A collection of works by Japanese photographer Takashi Homma. This photobook features 111 portraits of Japanese people taken between 2002 and recent years. Paying homage to the influence of "mentors" such as Pritzker Prize-winning architect Arata Isozaki and Takuma Nakahira, co-founder and inaugural editor of the legendary photography magazine "PROVOKE" published from 1968 to 1970, Homma simultaneously captures a wide range of professions and life experiences of people of all generations who are still active today, expressing them in the form of portraits. Carrying a quiet strength and undeniable clarity that seeps through the stillness, the book invites us to gaze intently and deeply consider the everyday yet extraordinary visages of the "faces" that shape the social and cultural structure of contemporary Japan.

    Over the past 40 years, the artist has produced various works and become one of the most influential figures in the Japanese photography world today. From his early works following suburban Tokyo landscapes in "Tokyo Suburbia" (1998, Korinsha Publishing) to conceptual explorations of architecture, nature, and urban history, he has consistently challenged and expanded the role of photography in visual culture. The artist's influence extends not only within Japan but also internationally, with exhibitions and publications contributing to the emergence and development of a global dialogue surrounding identity, place, and the evolution of the visual language presented in photobooks.

    This book joins the rich tradition of socially engaged portraiture, echoing groundbreaking masterpieces such as August Sander's "Face of Our Time" (1929), Irving Penn's "Small Trades" (photographed and printed: 1950s-1960s, published as a book: 2009), and more recently, Wolfgang Tillmans' "Portraits" (2002), Rineke Dijkstra's series of adolescents, and Paul Graham's "End of an Age" (1999). In Japan, works like Shomei Tomatsu's series of portraits intimately depicting daily life after the war, Yoshihiko Ueda's "Portrait" (2003 / popular edition: 2022) documenting Japanese masters who lived through the Showa era, Hiroo Kikai's "Asakusa Portraits" (2008), Issei Suda's "Tokyo Scenery" (2013), and Katsumi Watanabe's "Shinjuku Gunto-den 66/73" (1973) have captured the individuality and quiet dignity of anonymous people living in Tokyo.

    What distinguishes this book is its deliberate focus on ordinary individuals, photographed with the same deep attention and respect that is sometimes directed towards cultural icons. This collection of portraits was primarily taken in familiar urban settings, where the locations themselves possess a spotlight-like quality that reveals the psychological depths of the subjects. Homma's approach is not as overtly political as Shomei Tomatsu's portraits, encompasses a broader range of Japanese people than Hiroo Kikai or Katsumi Watanabe, and reveals more humanity than Yoshihiko Ueda. Homma's portraits are guided by a desire and empathy to observe people as they are, free from artifice and staging. The result is a more comprehensive and nuanced visual representation of Japanese identity, expanding the scope of the lens through which both domestic and international observers can view it.
