Book: The Shakers: A World in the Making
The Shakers, a Christian Protestant community active in America from the 18th to the 19th centuries, were more than just a religious group. They created a clear and functional design language that continues to resonate today. This book explores the principles and ideals of the Shakers, rooted in simplicity, equality, communal values, and pacifism. The essays and Shaker-related texts included offer insights into the historical development brought about by their furniture and architecture, which are considered precursors to modern design and architectural language.
The exhibition features over 150 Shaker works, including the oval Shaker box, as well as functional and beautiful furniture, tools, and architectural elements. It also showcases new works created by contemporary designers and artists who have explored the Shaker worldview, examining how this unique culture has remained continuously relevant in the 21st century.
Contributors include Glenn Adamson, a curator, writer, and historian specializing in design, craft, and contemporary art; Aaron Betsky, an architectural critic, curator, educator, and writer; Amie Cunat, a contemporary artist; Jeffrey De Blois, a curator; Chris Liljenberg Halstrøm, a designer; David Hartt, an artist; Sarah Margolis-Pineo, a curator; Christien Meindertsma, an artist and designer; Kameelah Janan Rasheed, an artist; Finnegan Shannon; Mabel O. Wilson, an architectural researcher; and Reggie Wilson. Richly illustrated with archival materials and newly shot photographs, the book offers a critical perspective on the Shakers' influence today.
The exhibition is structured around four themes, quoting words left by the Shakers: "The Place Just Right," "When We Find a Good Thing, We Stick To It," "Every Force Evolves a Form," and "I Don’t Want to be Remembered as a Chair." It explores the Shakers' worldview and social structure, focusing on their unique communal lifestyle, including gender segregation in daily life, celibacy, shared property, and separation from the secular world, as well as their shaking, dancing, and music during worship.
