Book: THE LIVES OF DOCUMENTS - PHOTOGRAPHY AS PROJECT
This project is the first in a trilogy of long-term projects researched, exhibited, and produced by the "CCA," exploring photography as a medium situated between art, research tool, and record, for investigating the built environment. Since its inception, the "CCA" has undertaken various pioneering initiatives to redefine the role of photography not only in architecture but also in research institutions and collections. With this in mind, the project was conceived as an open-research exhibition, showcasing the works of photographers from the 1970s to the present, held in the "CCA" collection, along with unreleased projects, books, mock-ups of publications, some interviews, and materials related to their creative process, all compiled into this book.
The aim is to analyze the practices of artists and photographers who have critically contributed to defining the threshold of transformation in this field over the past 50 years, relating them to specific topics, such as the concept of landscape or the complexities of the archive as a project format. Embracing the idea of documentation as an inherent quality embedded in the photographic language, it questions the validity and practicality of photography as a means to interrogate and interpret the mechanisms that model our visible world.
How do photographers select, arrange, and present images to engage in visual discussions about architecture and the natural environment? Edited by photographer Bas Princen and photographer/visual artist Stefano Graziani, this book selects and introduces photographic projects that model our visible world by examining the research materials, archived practices, and creative processes of various photographers, exploring concepts such as landscape and its destruction, global infrastructure, intimacy and interiority, and the conditions of urban and domestic spaces and life.
Following the journey of this research by the two individuals, readers will discover how the authors treat photography as an "artistic research tool" and how their pursuit considers an evolving and expanding project. Featuring studio visits, interviews, and the two individuals' own photographic projects, this book emphasizes how photography reveals and connects life and architectural realities in ways that traditional architectural tools could not express or convey.
