A collection of works by Danish architect Jørn Utzon. This book introduces "CAN LIS," a residence built on the coast of Mallorca, Spain, in 1972.

"When an architect designs and builds for themselves, they have the opportunity to push the boundaries of their imagination." - Line Nørskov Davenport

This book is a visual ode to "Can Lis," one of the most iconic houses of the 20th century, conceived while captivated by the Mediterranean sunlight. An ideal early example of drawing inspiration from a location and reflecting it in the design, this residence stands on a cliff in Mallorca overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, almost entirely covered by the exterior walls and columns made of Mares sandstone, its building material. "Can Lis" was built after the architect's masterpiece, the "Sydney Opera House," and was the first permanent residential building he designed. The photographs in this work are by Simon Watson, capturing the movement of light that has accompanied this residence, which served as the Utzon family home for over 20 years. Selected archival photographs from his private collection, sketches, and blueprints are also included, guiding us from the initial conceptual stages to how the house was used day-to-day.

In creative essays written by the architect himself during his lifetime, his relationship with nature is explored. His son, Jan Utzon, reflects on Mallorca and his father's connection to the family in a conversation with Robbie Whitehead, editor-in-chief of *Apartamento* magazine. Imagining the endless horizon from the residence, Line Nørskov Davenport, exhibition director at the Utzon Center, the architect's final project, contemplates his departure from the Opera House and his eventual finding of peace in Mallorca. "Is this paradise?" she wonders. Gazing at the initial sketches that inspired the idea of "Can Lis," she ponders, envisioning this "dream" finally realized in a meditative landscape, where only the sea breeze whispers.

This book is published with the support of Ferm Living, a Danish interior and lifestyle brand, and includes a foreword by the brand and its head of design, Phillipp Materna.
