Book: FORMAFANTASMA: OLTRE TERRA by Formafantasma
The exhibition, comprising artworks, agricultural products, cultural artifacts, photographs, videos, and other materials, suggests that wool is more than just a raw material for design and the textile industry. The domesticated "sheep" as we know it has evolved over hundreds of years. Humans have fed sheep and protected them from predators, and in return, they have obtained wool, a substance with magical properties that profoundly changed the history of humans and animals.
The central installation of this exhibition is a critical attempt at the diorama display method. Dioramas, commonly used in natural history museums to statically reproduce natural scenes, are here expanded into an installation featuring six life-size replicas of various sheep breeds, carpets made from discarded wool fibers, documents, a film work by Polish photographer Joanna Piotrowska, by-products of the manufacturing process, and various types of organic matter. All elements are presented in parallel to subvert the persistent classifications that separate humans and animals, products and biological matter.
