    A collection of works by Swiss photographer Philippe Fragnière, who is based in London and Switzerland. Vésonaz is a small village in the Valais region of southwestern Switzerland, much of which is occupied by the Alps. This book is the culmination of the artist's decade-long engagement with the surrounding nature and landscape. The artist attempted to walk the same paths as his ancestors and experience what they perceived. Borrowing motifs and narrative ideas from legends and oral traditions, he selects "objects," sometimes moving them to his studio, transforming them into temporary totems (symbols). Vernacular architecture and amphibians appear alongside land, plants, and animals, formally elevated into symbols. The juxtaposed photographs capture a phenomenological experience of the terrain to which the artist has returned, having overcome sadness. The artist found solace and peace in the changing seasons and in the infinitely slow passage of time. The series of images exists suspended between fact and fiction, neither solid nor liquid, like glass. Regardless of scale, everything is magnified and made equal. The artist asks: Does that which no one records exist as fact or as fiction? "If you listen closely, the windowpanes melt and flow into a distant stream. We exist within the spring." The images included in this book are accompanied by a short story by Swiss writer Valmir Rexhepi. Reading the text that flows from top to bottom on each page, the dialogue becomes a short poem. The characters in the story are described topographically, and the self is created through an encounter with an environment that is both intimately familiar and elusive.
