Book: AUTOPROGETTAZIONE? by Enzo Mari
The Italian word "autoprogettazione" is difficult to translate. A literal translation would be "auto" for self and "progettazione" for design, but since most people associate "design" with superficial decorations, "self-design" could be misleading. The author used this term to mean "an act that each person should undertake themselves to better understand the sincerity behind a project." To enable this act, the book explains very simple and typical techniques step-by-step. Even if the furniture completed with this book is durable for actual use, its importance lies solely in its educational value. This project aims to create furniture that can be easily assembled with just wood and nails, and it also teaches elementary techniques that encourage a critical eye towards what one is making. It was also a provocative proposal against the paradigm of mass consumption capitalism, embodying the idea of making furniture yourself, only when and as much as needed. The first edition was published in 1974, compiled by the Duchamp Center, in conjunction with an exhibition held at the Galleria in Milan.
