The 11th issue of 'ARK JOURNAL,' a bi-annual interior design magazine from Scandinavia. Stories of beautiful homes around the world and the people who live in them reveal that spaces are more than just a place for beautiful furniture and art; they are an expression of philosophy and personality. Founded in 2019 by Mette Barfod, who served for many years as an editor and stylist for a renowned Danish interior magazine, this publication focuses on "the spaces around us, the objects we place in them, and the creators of those objects." It explores the interplay of architecture, design, and art through a Scandinavian lens of values and aesthetics. This issue is available with three different covers.
This issue considers how history shapes our understanding of art, design, and architecture, celebrating the fluidity of interpretation that evolves with time and the importance of context.
How do architects navigate the interaction of tradition and innovation? It explores how they envision the future while drawing on historical precedents, how adaptive reuse breathes new life into old structures, and how architectural interventions respect the cultural heritage of a site.
Featured are two iconic mid-century modern residences in Mexico City and Cincinnati. These homes have undergone transformations while maintaining deep respect for their rich history and significance. The South Californian architectural language of American architect Ray Kappe is translated into a contemporary home in Berlin. Additionally, a residence on a Baltic Sea island was built to experience untamed nature.
Johannesburg-based architect and curator Sumayya Vally is a representative voice for the younger generation. In an interview, she emphasizes how identity, belonging, and cultural hybridity shape architecture beyond conventional norms. We also visit Hvitträsk, the early Finnish home of Eliel Saarinen and Loja Saarinen, where creativity and community are fundamentally intertwined.
In "Case Studies," interior stylist Pernille Vest explores furniture crafted from precious noble wood, shaped by time and skilled hands, as works of art. In "Basel," two generations of gallerists from the von Bartha family at Gallery von Bartha share how they live and work with art.
"Design Metaphors" explores the origins of architecture through the photographs of Italian architect and industrial designer Ettore Sottsass. Editor Dung Ngo also converses with curator Ana Elena Mallet, who curated an exhibition on the history of Latin American design at MoMA, discussing the region's design history where craft and industry shaped a hybrid identity.
Finally, "Portfolio" explores how new ideas of utopia in architecture, design, and art have shaped contemporary Latin America.
