The 9th issue of ARK JOURNAL, a biannual interior magazine from Scandinavia. The stories of beautiful homes around the world and the people who live in them reveal that a space is more than just a place for beautiful furniture and art; it is an expression of philosophy and personality. Founded in 2019 by Mette Barfod, who has served as editor and stylist for famous Danish interior magazines for many years, the magazine focuses on "the spaces around us, the objects we place in them, and the creators of those objects." It highlights the interplay of architecture, design, and art through Scandinavian values and aesthetics. Each issue comes with four different covers.

This issue takes as its starting point the question "What is already there?" and examines the creativity and effort involved in new projects, renovations, restorations, and extensions.

First, it delves into Copenhagen's rich architectural heritage. We visit an artist couple who, when renovating their Copenhagen apartment, struggled to balance preserving the soul of the building with making it a family home. A photo essay by Danish architect Matthias Mentze captures the rich colors, mosaic floors, and frescoes of the Thorvaldsen Museum, Copenhagen's oldest museum. Sculpture by Irish-American artist Sean Scully is displayed within its interiors, and this issue includes an interview with Scully. Also, a special supplement in this issue features the work of Copenhagen-based artist Albert Grøndahl, who explores the intersection of personal narratives with cultural and historical references.

In Mexico, a couple running a contemporary art gallery called "Kurimanzutto" transformed a series of ruins into an art-filled home where old and new harmonize and indoor and outdoor spaces merge, all while preserving the existing structures.

Fanny Bauer Grung and David Lopez Quincoces' architecture and design studio, "Quincoces-Dragò & Partners," believes that old and new can not only coexist but also illuminate the past and present, and they put this philosophy into practice in their Milan home and new studio.

Great design and architecture have an inherent power to evoke emotion and enrich the experience within a space. This issue features homes and spaces where design has a profound impact, both physically and emotionally, including the studio and home of Finnish design master Yrjö Kukkapuro, a house in Oaxaca open to the jungle, a transparent penthouse in Antwerp, and a humble yet soulful mid-century home in Los Angeles.

    Featured artists:
Matthias Mentze (architect), Albert Grøndahl (photographer), Fanny Bauer Grung & David Lopez Quincoces (architect and designer), Yrjö Kukkapuro (designer), Sean Scully (artist), and others
