In 2014, Dutch designer Christien Meindertsma was commissioned by the Texture Flax Museum in Kortrijk, Belgium, to create a permanent exhibition piece: a dove made of linen.
Indeed, 200 of these doves are installed throughout the museum building. The work draws inspiration from the painful memory that during World War I, the museum building was occupied by German forces and used to house carrier pigeons for espionage. Each dove is handmade from 100% Belgian flax fabric, and the filling uses flax seeds, giving it a pleasant weight and feel. A small note can be attached to the tail of each dove, allowing it to be used as an actual messenger.

    Christien Meindertsma

Born in Utrecht, Netherlands, in 1980. Graduated from Design Academy Eindhoven in 2003. Based in the Netherlands, she explores the relationship between raw materials and their products, with a design approach that meticulously researches a single product and its origins, working with both domestic and international clients. Her research records themselves become part of her works, such as 'Checked Baggage,' a book classifying 3,267 items collected from seized shipping containers, and 'PIG 05049,' which lists nearly 200 products made from a single pig named 05049. Through these works, she aims to visualize the relationship between raw materials, producers, and products, and to restore understanding of the manufacturing processes of industrial products that have become obscured. Her works have been exhibited at MoMA, the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum, and the Victoria and Albert Museum. She has received awards such as the Dutch Design Award (2008) and the INDEX: Award (2009).
