Pigeon Service [B] / Christien Meindertsma
The Dutch female designer Christien Meindertsma created a pigeon objet d'art made of linen in 2014, commissioned by the Texture Flax Museum in Kortrijk, Belgium, as a permanent exhibit. In fact, 200 pigeons are displayed throughout the museum building as an installation. This work was inspired by the painful memory that during World War I, the museum building was occupied by the German army and used as a facility to house carrier pigeons for espionage activities. Each pigeon is handmade from 100% Belgian FLAX fabric, and the filling also uses flax seeds, giving it a moderate weight and pleasant texture. A small note is attached to the tail of each pigeon, so it can actually be used as a messenger.
Christien Meindertsma
Born in Utrecht, Netherlands in 1980. Graduated from Design Academy Eindhoven in 2003. Based in the Netherlands, she explores the relationship between raw materials and their products, and has clients both domestically and internationally with a design approach that meticulously researches a single product and its origins. Works like "Checked Baggage," a book classifying 3267 items collected from seized shipping containers, and "PIG 05049," which lists nearly 200 products made from a single pig named 05049, demonstrate how the research record itself becomes part of the work. Through these works, she aims to visualize the relationship between raw materials, producers, and products, and similarly to regain an understanding of the manufacturing process of industrial products that has become obscured. Her works have been exhibited at MoMA, the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum, and the Victoria and Albert Museum. She has received awards such as the Dutch Design Award (2008) and the INDEX Award (2009).
