ESSI is a word meaning "shingled roof" in the Vosges region of France, referring to planks split along the grain of the wood, which serve to protect roofs and exterior walls from the weather. The inspiration comes from this traditional technique that highlights the natural grain and texture of the wood.
Tohmas uses this craft technique to create free-form objects, aiming to express the rawness of the cut edges and the individuality of each piece of wood.
Using a saw and chisel to split the planks, materials are carefully selected based on the necessary conditions to shape each face of the work, such as thickness and length. The cut planks are then glued and assembled with wooden rods, and finished with a coating based on natural beeswax and carnauba wax.

A design studio founded by Thomas Roger in 2022.
Based in Mulhouse, Alsace, the studio specializes in woodworking, creating handmade objects using various traditional manufacturing techniques. Shapes and collections are designed based on the intended use of the object, the type of wood used, and the assembly method.
The studio aims to build delicate craftsmanship, enhance the relationship with everyday objects, pursue responsible design, and create highly artistic works that are also functional.
