TRACE Koban [Red Tame / Lacquerware] Display Item
"TRACE" is a mirror based on traditional and basic Japanese trays. By setting the mirror surface slightly inward from the rim, the connection from the rim to the bottom plate is visible, allowing you to feel the original form of a tray. We have adapted elements of lacquerware into a shape that can be easily incorporated into modern life.
This is a lacquerware version featuring traditional tamenuri (a layered lacquer technique). Tamenuri involves applying vermilion lacquer as a base, then finishing with a layer of clear lacquer on top. This results in a deep color with a subtle hint of the vermilion base showing through. Furthermore, as the transparency of the lacquer increases over time, the vermilion base will become more visible, causing the color to change.

Formed in 2008 by Kenji Ito and Takahiro Umino. Both are graduates of Kuwasawa Design School. They create objects that blend into daily life by firmly grasping the ambiguous atmosphere that lies behind things, even if it cannot be fully articulated.
