This work, "Shitsurai," was created by Hiroshima-based musician Meitei as music embodying the philosophy of "WARA," which creates a world reflecting Japanese tradition and sensibilities. The work expresses the lyricism of the passing of time, based on the themes of "Risshun" (beginning of spring), "Rikka" (beginning of summer), "Risshu" (beginning of autumn), and "Ritto" (beginning of winter), from the "24 Solar Terms," a calendar that further divides Japan's four seasons into six parts.
Embodying the concept of the word "Shitsurai" (meaning to decorate, to set up and arrange), which is the title of the EP, Meitei himself played and recorded the piano, with an emphasis on space, and meticulously crafted the work through careful editing and arrangement. The four tracks, designed with delicate piano sounds and various textures such as natural sounds and electronics, expand like an infinite microcosm, repeating small changes within the fleeting 15 minutes. The piano in this work also serves as a metaphor for Meitei's individual existence, surrounded by new environments with each changing season.
While Meitei's fundamental theme of reinterpreting "Ushinawaretsutsu aru Nihon no Jōcho" (the fading Japanese sentiment) remains at its core, this work offers a glimpse into Meitei's unique sound world from a new perspective different from his previous works.
