Throughout the 1960s, the artist's practice uniquely combined several contemporary trends: conceptualism, minimalism, and participatory art with social engagement. In her manifesto, published in 'Art International' in May 1968, she articulated the social demands on art and the impossibility of fulfilling them. Shortly after its publication, the artist left the art world, studied sociology, and transitioned to working in new fields.
This book is conceived as a visual resume, offering a comprehensive overview of the artist's solo exhibitions and including records of numerous group exhibitions. It also features an essay by curator Erlend Hammer, who discusses the role of photographic documentation in capturing the breadth of her work.
The exhibition at the Haugar Art Museum was the artist's first major retrospective in Scandinavia and covered the entirety of her main modular sculpture series with structural systems. The works, created in a period of just under 12 months between 1967 and 1968, were made just before the artist abruptly ended her artistic practice, giving the exhibition the impression of capturing a fleeting moment. Was her departure from the art world a logical or inevitable consequence of the series' development? How should we interpret the artist's assertion that art lacks the power to genuinely transform society? This book opens these questions to the present.
