A collection of works by "GECKELER MICHELS", a Berlin-based design studio founded in 2013 by David Geckeler and Frank Michels. It was published in conjunction with the exhibition "GECKELER MICHELS Dialogues" held at Karimoku Commons Tokyo from May to June 2025.
Founded by David Geckeler, born in Scherzingen, Switzerland in 1984, and Frank Michels, born in Luxembourg, the studio primarily handles furniture, lighting, product, and spatial design. As a design duo with roots in Germany and Luxembourg, they intentionally incorporate past design history, contemporary technology, and digital design methods to present an innovative approach to a new functionalism.
This book, the first publication for "GECKELER MICHELS," was created by combining elements of a monograph, a magazine, and a pamphlet of design essays. Using a free composition where a vast collection of images unfolds seamlessly, it offers a unique perspective on the studio's design philosophy and the production process behind it. The projects included feature works created for domestic and international clients such as "Fredericia," "Karimoku New Standard," "Muuto," "Nespresso," "Nike," "Tecta," and "ZUCCa."
It also includes dialogues with product designers Boris Berlin and Axel Kufus, industrial designer Hermann Weizenegger, and artist and designer Ronan Bouroullec, presenting multifaceted perspectives on the design industry.
