Book: AT HOME IN LONDON: THE MEWS HOUSE by Ellis Woodman
Intimate in scale, "mews houses" are located behind the grand townhouses of Georgian and Victorian London and originally served as stables for horses and carriages. With the advent of the automobile in the early 20th century, these secluded spaces began to be repurposed as homes, favored by artists and bohemians. As their popularity grew, mews houses also became sought-after sites for new builds. These homes were often radical and experimental, challenging conventional notions of domesticity within historic urban centers.
This book documents seventeen examples of this rich tradition, from the 1960s to the present day, with new photography and detailed drawings. It particularly highlights architects' own homes, including works by John Winter, Ted and Roz Cullinan, and Peter St John and Siw Thomas. Architecture critic Ellis Woodman traces the history of this enduringly popular architectural form, from early pioneers like ceramicist Lucie Rie to Peter Barber's monumental Edgewood Mews (2022) and the potential of mews houses as a new model for housing development, exemplified by Al-Jawad Pike's Chowdhury Walk (2023).
This book is the second in a series on London's housing forms, following "At Home in London: The Mansion Block" (2023), and examines urban living arrangements against the backdrop of a long-standing housing crisis.
