A collection of works by German artist Josef Albers and Italian artist Giorgio Morandi. Published in conjunction with an exhibition held at the David Zwirner gallery in New York in 2020. This book explores the affinities and contrasts visible in the creations and backgrounds of these two painters, both of whom were leading figures in modern art. While it is rare for their works to be exhibited together, many commonalities can be observed. Although they never met, both shared a creative approach that continuously pursued differences and possibilities, while applying unique methods to color, shape, form, and structure. Influenced by Paul Cézanne, both were masters of optical illusion and proportion, and despite their differing perspectives, they shared similar sources of inspiration. Albers focused on the subtleties of color, or bold changes, and the effects brought about by the resulting interactions, while Morandi painted still lifes that treated simple objects as characters on a stage, exploring their relationships within that space.

Alongside numerous illustrations, the book includes a roundtable discussion on form and color featuring three participants: David Leiber, the exhibition curator; Heinz Liesbrock, director of the Josef Albers Museum Quadrat Bottrop in Germany; and Nicholas Fox Weber, director of the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation. The essays are contributed by Laura Mattioli, a curator, art historian, founder of the Center for Italian Modern Art, and a specialist in Morandi studies.
