A collection of works by Terri Weifenbach, an American photographer based in Paris.

How do we perceive our environment? What is our relationship with a delicate world? How can we photograph the elusive?

The title, "Cloud Physics," is a branch of atmospheric physics closely related to meteorology and climatology, and inseparable from the study of climate change.

In this work, the artist explores the interrelationships created by the intimate forms and textures of clouds and biological life on Earth. The backdrop to this work is a series of photographs taken at an American research facility used for studying and measuring clouds—their origins, structures, particles, and relationship with the sun. This relates to the Guggenheim Fellowship the artist received in 2015. The artist photographs the facility's equipment as exotic, yet this equipment is designed to represent transient atmospheric phenomena as numerical data. However, the artist's perspective and camera portray the organic terrestrial world as an "enigma" that we cannot quantify. Peering into subtle changes in light and humidity, fire, lightning, iridescent mists and vapors, and the animal and plant kingdoms. The wide-ranging and vivid scenes depicted by the artist unfold as if myths exist within myths, set against the backdrop of endless meteorological phenomena.

The essay is contributed by Luce Lebart, a photo historian and curator at AMC (ARCHIVE OF MODERN CONFLICT) and elsewhere. Published by the French publisher "Atelier EXB" and the American publisher "THE ICE PLANT," this book is the "THE ICE PLANT" edition.
