Book: EILEEN GRAY, DESIGNER AND ARCHITECT by Eileen Gray
The author, who displayed diverse talents as a designer and architect, interacted with various prominent figures in the literary and art worlds throughout her life. This book traces her career as a designer, architect, painter, and photographer chronologically. In addition to the results of new research, it includes abundant photographs from the time and newly shot illustrations, as well as essays that deeply analyze over 50 designs and architectural works.
Born in Ireland, the author studied in London before moving to Paris to establish a textile studio. The Japanese lacquerware she learned during this period became central to her work as a designer. She also owned and directed "Jean Désert," a gallery and shop. Nevertheless, as a "woman" who was largely self-taught, the author struggled to be recognized in a male-dominated industry.
While currently known for her furniture, lighting, and carpets, the author has also undertaken numerous architecturally and personally significant architectural and interior projects. These include her representative modern dwelling "Villa E 1027," which she designed with Jean Badovici, and the economical and demountable "Camping Tent."
Co-authored by Cloé Pitiot, curator of Art Nouveau, Art Deco, and Modern Design at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, and Nina Stritzler-Levine, director of the Bard Graduate Center (BGC) in New York.
