Yohei Nakazato has an unusual background, having majored in industrial design at a university in the UK, then working for a general company before beginning to produce lacquerware on his own in 2012. He handles all steps of the production process himself, from preparing the wood to applying the undercoat and finishing layers. He uses rare, domestically produced lacquer from Nagano for the final coating, resulting in an elegant sheen and smooth texture. The balance between the beautiful design and the marks left by his hand carving creates a truly beautiful piece of lacquerware. He is currently based in Aoki Village, Nagano Prefecture.
