Yohei Nakazato has an unusual background: after majoring in industrial design at a British university, he worked for a general company, and then, from 2012, taught himself lacquerware production. He handles every step of the process himself, from creating the wooden base to the undercoat and painting. For the finishing lacquer, he uses precious domestically produced lacquer from Nagano, which gives his pieces a refined luster and smooth feel. His lacquerware is characterized by a beautiful balance of elegant design and the marks of his hand carving. He is currently based in Aoki Village, Nagano Prefecture.
